The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
