Mounting worries have emerged regarding the potential of armed conflict among Horn of Africa neighbors, Ethiopia and the Eritrean government, as hostile language has intensified in the last month.

What Did Ethiopian Officials Said?

Landlocked Ethiopia's calls for entry to the sea coast through Eritrea has sparked a intense war of words.

The minister has dismissed Ethiopia's push for sea access describing it as "dangerous" and a "harmful plan" of "irredentism" – a policy of reclaiming previous domains.

Eritrean authorities warned on 16 September that moves to validate "flagrant aggression" would have significant repercussions for Ethiopia and its neighbors and is a "redline that should not be crossed|violated|breached".

Security Preparations on the Border

There have been few indications of large-scale army activities in the border areas between the two countries.

However, in the country, government media has shown graduation ceremonies of numerous trainees at different defense facilities.

The director of staff section of the defense force, General Hachalu, stated recently in an conversation that the defense forces was in a "strong stance" as "many thousands of young people" were entering service, which he said was "a warning to our opponents".

Past Roots of the Dispute

For more than half a century from 1890, the territory was administered by colonial powers.
